Welcome to the Building Department

Our purpose is to ensure that all work is done to applicable codes and to safeguard life, health and property.

All Contractors must register with the Town, see Contractor License Registration

Building Permits are needed for all new construction (residential, commercial, industrial etc.) and for the following improvements/enhancements to property within the Town of Milliken:

- installation of a detached garage or shed over 120 sq. feet (Requires Handout)

- installation of decks or patios (Requires Handout)

- patio covers or enclosing existing decks or patios (Requires Handout)

- hot tub electrical work

- installation of a sprinkler system

- any electrical work

- installation of air conditioners

- building moves or demolition

- installation or replacement of furnace/gas heater and water heater/boiler replacements

- re-roofing (Requires Handout)

- remodeling and basement finishes (Requires Handout)

- siding/windows/awnings

- addition (Requries Handout)

- wood and pellet stoves

Fees – are based on the actual cost of the work being completed. Town of Milliken collects 2.5 % on the material cost for Use Tax.

Time Frame to receive permit after submittal is an average of 3 days.

SPECIAL NOTE:

New Xcel Energy Meter Socket Requirements

Effective June 1, 2010 Xcel will require all single phase residential electric meter sockets, combination meter socket/load-center in their service territory to be equipped with a 200AMP HEAVY DUTY LEVER ACTUATED LOCKING-JAW BYPASS.

Building Permit Fee Information

(For Non-New Construction)

Most Building Permits will include the following fees/taxes:

          Building Permit Fee (Based on Table or Chart)

             Administration Fee (10% of Building Permit Fee (Electrical Fee and Plan Review if Applicable))

             Use Tax (2.5% of Materials)

Some Building Permits may also include:

Electrical Fee (Calculation Information)

Plan Review Fee (30% of Building Permit Fee for Residential 65% for Commercial/Industrial)

The Town of Milliken calculates building permit fees based on the TOTAL CONSTRUCTION VALUE (Both Materials and Labor) of the work being done. If a homeowner is going to complete the work themselves there still needs to be a value for labor. A good rule of thumb is if you are doing the work yourself, Labor = ½ of Materials.

For remodels, basement finishes and additions the Total Construction Value may be based on square footage calculations completed by the Building Inspector.
